Hofmann/Präger 1913/1 - Provenienz: Aus der Familie der Künstlerin. - Maria Uhden zählt zu den eigenständigen Künstlerpersönlichkeiten des deutschen Expressionismus und gilt als wichtige Weggefährtin sowie künstlerische Anregerin ihres späteren Ehemanns Georg Schrimpf. Subtile Grün-, Braun- und Ockertöne sowie eine lichtdurchdrungene Atmosphäre verleihen der Darstellung ihre friedliche Wirkung. Die vertikalen Baumstämme gliedern den Bildraum und schaffen eine kontemplative Ruhe, die bereits auf jene idealisierte Naturauffassung verweist, die später auch Georg Schrimpfs Werk prägen sollte. - Innerhalb von Uhdens schmalem Oeuvre nimmt das Gemälde eine besondere Stellung ein. Während die Künstlerin heute vor allem für ihre expressiven Holzschnitte und figürlichen Kompositionen bekannt ist, zeigt sich hier ihre intensive Beschäftigung mit Landschaft und Erinnerung. Die Darstellung wirkt weniger wie eine topographische Wiedergabe als vielmehr wie die poetische Vision eines vertrauten, verlorenen Ortes. In der Verbindung von Natur, Architektur und menschlicher Figur entsteht eine Bildwelt von stiller Melancholie und zeitloser Schönheit.
